Meet the Breed: Pomsky

What is a Pomsky?
If you thought Pomeranians couldn’t get anymore squeezable or that Huskies couldn’t be any more lovable, it’s time for you to learn some Pomsky breed facts; this breed is a “designer dog” taking the world by storm! And we can see why--as a cross between a Pomeranian and a Husky, they have quite the personality to go along with their gush-worthy looks.
These adorable pups have distinct features that have made them social media darlings. They have the familiar black and brown markings of a Husky on a predominantly white coat, but some can be entirely white if they take after their Pomeranian parent more. Mismatched eyes are not uncommon, with one eye being the icy blue of a Husky and the other the deep chestnut of a Pomeranian. The breed tends to be medium-sized at 20-30 pounds and 15-20 inches tall.
Interesting note: Because of the size difference between the two breeds, Pomskies are typically test tube babies.

Pomsky Temperament
Pomsky temperament can be a handful if training doesn’t start early. With the stubbornness of a Pomeranian and free-willed spirit of a Husky, Pomskies want to do what they want, when they want. But all is not lost! Start pomsky training early to prevent any issues down the road. Begin with basics like potty training and hold off on tricks and other directives to ensure they get the basics down.
Pomskies have characteristics of both Pomeranians and Huskies, and therefore can be talkative (barking and whining excessively). One way to curb this behavior is to housebreak them so that they don’t get yappy when they need to go potty. Using an indoor dog bathroom like Bark Potty is a great way to provide your Pomsky the relief they need before they begin whining. They’re also territorial and protective, so if you have more than one dog in the house, be sure to offer more than one real bark potty.
Beyond their stubborn streak, they are known to be highly affectionate, playful, and friendly dogs that are best for homes that have the space and time that will allow for an abundance of playtime and attention.
Pomsky Training
The key to Pomsky training is starting early and asserting your role as the alpha asap. Huskies are definitely pack animals, and if you don’t make it clear that you’re the alpha early on, they’ll sense this and walk all over you. Luckily, because Pomskies are highly intelligent they respond well to award based training, so be sure to stock up on their favorite treats before starting!
Pomskies are a willful breed that may not be the best fit for a first time dog parent, but they’re sure to bring joy and laughter into any home. They have a loyalty that matches their stubbornness, and if you can manage their unique personalities they’ll reward you with an unparalleled companionship.
