I used the pheromone spray (a few squirts randomly throughout the day) for the first bark potty and removed all the surrounding rugs, but didn’t need to do much training other than that. My dog picked it up in a few days after all the other soft surfaces were taken out of the surrounding area. Every morning, first thing we would do after waking up is play a little bit of fetch to get her body going, and I would throw her toy in the direction of the bark potty. Then by the third throw, she would run towards her toy & bark potty routinely just do her morning business, then I would treat her right away. I’d repeat every 4-5 hours or when I felt like she might have built up a full bladder. In a few more days it became habit by the 2nd then 1st throw, to when she would just automatically know that was her ok-to-potty zone. She’s had a small handful of accidents on other rugs in the first 2-3 months, but definitely fewer and far between. I have put my hallway runners back and they’ve remained unsoiled for over a month now, which is huge progress. The one complaint I have is that with heavy use, it does start taking on a weird enzyme-y urine smell that gets quite strong after the 3rd week, but it has saved us from the unseasonably rainy weather here lately- which is a lifesaver because my girl does NOT do well in the cold & wet.
